Solo Piano Competition

Mission
The Oriens Music Competition is devoted to inspiring the next generation to explore, create, and perform music with Asian influences, fostering connections across communities and broadening their vision from local appreciation to a global cultural perspective.

Important Dates

  • February 1–28, 2025: Early registration 

  • March 1–16, 2025: Regular registration and video submission

  • April 1, 2025: Preliminary results announced via email and on www.Facebook.com/TrioOriens

  • April 26, 2025: Final round and award ceremony at the Culture Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, Texas

Note: Videos submitted on or after March 17, 2025, will be disqualified from the competition.

Winner Awards

  • First Place: $500 and winner certificates

  • Second Place: $300 and winner certificates

  • Third Place: $200 and winner certificates​

 

Guidelines

Repertoire Requirements

Junior Division: Participants born on or after April 26, 2011.

  • Each contestant must perform two pieces, with a maximum total duration of ten minutes:

    1. Mandatory Selection: Yi-Chih Lu: Tea Plucking Song (Simplified version).

    2. Choice Piece: Select one piece from the University Interscholastic League (UIL) of Texas Prescribed Music List (PML), Grade 1 or 2.

Senior Division: Participants born between September 1, 2006, and April 25, 2011.

  • Each contestant must perform two pieces, with a maximum total duration of twelve minutes. 

    1. Mandatory Selection: Yi-Chih Lu: Peach Blossom Takes the Ferry (Concert version).

    2. Choice Piece: Select one piece from the University Interscholastic League (UIL) of Texas Prescribed Music List (PML), Grade 1 or 2.

 

Additional Guidelines

  • Memorization is not required.

  • No page turner is allowed on stage.

  • Performances exceeding the time limit will be interrupted.

  • If you wish to perform a piece not listed on the UIL PML, please email triooriens@gmail.com for approval prior to registration.

 

Video Recording Requirements

  • Two public YouTube links, one for each music selection.

  • Unedited recordings: movements recorded in one take, audio from the same take.

  • Continuity: movements could be recorded entirely but breaks allowed in between. Attacca movements with timestamps.

  • No editing: videos must not be edited or spliced.

  • Sound: use of an external microphone is allowed.

  • Ensemble performance: all members must be visible together in the same space throughout the recording.

  • Visuals: stationary picture without panning, close-ups, or school affiliations.

  • Resolution: minimum 1280x720 (720p).

  • Please upload your videos to YouTube and include the links during registration. Please ensure the video title starts with "Oriens 2025," followed by Piano Solo, the contestant's full name, composer's last name, work, and movement. For example:
    Oriens 2025 Solo Piano Ashley York, Beethoven Sonata in C minor, Opus 13 Mvt I.

  • File retention: please keep your original videos; they may be requested later.
